Ask Cheryl: Facial Dermal Fillers

Q:  My friends say they get “filler” in their face, what does that exactly mean?

A:  Fillers are injected directly into facial lines in the mid and lower fact to “fill in” wrinkles by replacing volume.

Most fillers are a gel that is made from hyaluronic acid; a substance that is produced naturally by our body.

Brand names include Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane and Belotero.  Another brand name is Radiesse, which has a different composition.

Fillers are used in the lips to plump them up, in the grooves that run from the nose to the corner of the mouth (naso-labial folds), in cheeks and lines around the month.

Filler injections actually don’t hurt due to the addition of lidocaine, a numbing agent. The results are immediate: a more youthful appearance with no downtimes and the results can be expected to last 6 to 18 months.

Don’t be afraid to give fillers a try: the key is a conservative approach.  The results can be stunning!
