Ask Cheryl | Dermal Facial Fillers — What are they?

Q: My friends talk about getting facial fillers in their face; what exactly are fillers

A: Dermal facial fillers are compounds that are injected into
various parts of the face to “fill” facial lines and wrinkles to replace lost volume.  Fillers will instantly smooth away the deeper lines along the sides of your nose and mouth.

They can also be injected into the cheeks to prove a “liquid facelift” to lift the lower face and provide more fullness in the upper face.  Fillers are also used to plump up lips and to give them more definition.

Most fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a clear gel which is derived from a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body.  Juvederm and Restylane are the most common brand names.

Fillers are extremely safe and the results are natural-looking.  There is lidocaine, a numbing agent, in the syringe, so injections are not painful, and the results will last between six months and two years.
