Nose Surgery*

Rhinoplasty

Also known as Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is an operation to improve the shape and size of the nose so that it is in harmony with the rest of the face.  Rhinoplasty is essentially a surgical sculpting of the nose and is accomplished by careful contouring of the bone and cartilage giving the nose its shape.  At the same time deformities that cause breathing problems and some sinus disorders can be corrected.  Most incisions (seamless rhinoplasty) are placed inside the nose where they are least visible.

Rhinoplasty is often an enhancement to facial rejuvenation, particularly in the correction of the aging nose (drooping of the tip).  A significant “combo” effect is seen with facial augmentation in conjunction with cosmetic nasal surgery.

In most instances, change in appearance can be seen immediately.

While the shape of your nose is usually the result of heredity, the appearance may have been altered in an injury or during prior surgery.

What can surgery of the nose accomplish?

Rhinoplasty can change:

  • Nose size, in relation to the other facial structures
  • Nose width, at the bridge
  • Nose profile, with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nasal tip, that is large or bulbous, drooping, or too upturned
  • Nostrils that are large, wide or upturned
  • Nasal asymmetry and deviation

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty is performed under sedation with local anesthesia.  The surgery takes approximately one and one-half to two hours.  The use of “seamless” nose surgery allows for no visible external scars and with this type of seamless nose surgery discomfort is minimized because no plates, tubes or painful packaging are used.

Considerations

Nose surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Surgery of the nose is a good option for you if:

  • Your facial growth is complete and you are 13 years of age or older
  • You are physically healthy
  • You stop smoking
  • You have specific, but realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance

 Is Rhinoplasty for you?

As with all facial plastic surgery, good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites.  The goal is to improve the nose aesthetically, making it harmonize better with other facial features.

Skin type, ethnic background, and age are important factors to be considered in discussions with your surgeon prior to surgery.

Whether the surgery is desired for functional or cosmetic reasons, your choice of a qualified facial plastic surgeon is of paramount importance.

You can expect a thorough explanation of the surgeon’s expectations and the risks involved in the surgery.  Following a joint decision by you and your surgeon to proceed with rhinoplasty, the surgeon will take photographs of you and discuss the options available.  Your surgeon will explain how the nasal structures, including bone and cartilage, can be sculpted to reshape the nose and indicate how reshaping the chin, for example, could enhance the desired results.

After conducting a thorough medical history, your surgeon will offer information regarding anesthesia, the surgical facility to be used, and the costs for the procedure.
