Ask Cheryl – Melasma or Blotchy Brown Patches

Q: I HAVE SOME BLOTCHY BROWN PATCHES OF SKIN ALONG THE SIDE OF MY FACE AND ALONG MY JAWLINE THAT ARE DARKER THAN THE REST OF MY FACE.  MY SKIN LOOKS STAINED AND THE COLOR IS UNEVEN.

A: Melasma is a condition whereby the pigment in your skin darkens unevenly when exposed to the sun.  It is more common in women than men, and causes include hormones, heredity and certain diseases.  When melisma occurs during pregnancy, it is called “pregnancy mask.”

Once melisma appears, it can be lightened with a combination of topical products and clinical treatments.  The recommended skin products include tretinoins and hydroquinone.

Brown spots and patches on forehead before and after treatment

Treatments that speed the lightening of these brown patches include moderate chemical peels, and/or fractional laser.

To help prevent melasma from returning, the use of a good broad spectrum sunscreen that contains 5% to 17% zinc oxide as a physical block is mandatory.
