Introduction to

Hair Restoration

While some men & women look great with no hair, most men feel self-conscious about their appearance when their follicles start to fall out. Whether it’s due to genetics, aging, stress, or some other factor, unexpected hair loss can be jarring to the ego and self-image. Hair loss affects about 85% of men and 50% of women, so it’s something that many people are forced to deal with. There are many options on the market to maintain your hair, but not everything works the way it should. At SkinHealth Centers in Boston and Wellesley Hills, we offer Hair Restoration using either PRP or PRF techniques to reignite your hair growth using platelets from your body. To learn more about this incredible restorative treatment, you should continue reading the information we have provided.

What is PRP & PRF Hair Restoration

Hair Restoration with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a non-surgical, medical procedure used for the treatment of thinning hair and hair loss. This minimally invasive procedure harnesses the body’s amazing healing and regenerative properties to stimulate hair follicles and improve hair growth for both men and women.

The  PRP procedure for hair regrowth begins with a standard blood draw from the patient’s arm.  The blood is put into a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The plasma, which is rich in growth factors, is then injected into the scalp where hair loss has occurred. These growth factors can help stimulate the activity of the hair follicles and promote new hair growth.

The injection schedule will depend on your genetics, pattern and amount of hair loss, age, and hormones.

PRF Hair Restoration is very similar to PRP, but rather than plasma, it is Platelet Rich Fibrin. Fibrin is a protein produced in response to bleeding and is the main reason for blood clotting. This technique encourages cell growth factors to regenerate and restore inactive hair follicles through wound-healing technology, which is essential for tissue regeneration and healing.

PRF is obtained in the same way as PRP, in that you will have your blood drawn and it will be placed in the centrifuge, but here is where the change occurs. Rather than spinning the vial faster to separate the platelets, it is spun at a lower speed so that the white blood cells, stem cells, and fibrin remain in the platelet layer.

Now, you’re probably trying to figure out which is right for you, and the truth is, everyone has different needs. When you come in for your consultation, the physician can help you decide which technique is best for you.

What to expect on the day of Hair Restoration?

When you come in for your Hair Restoration treatment, we will first withdraw the appropriate amount of blood to create your PRP or PRF injections. The blood will be put into a vial and placed into the centrifuge to separate the injectable from the rest of your blood. Once this has been done, the separated material will be strategically injected into areas of your scalp where your hair is thinning or lost. We can offer a topical numbing ointment or local anesthetic to make your experience more comfortable if needed. After the provider is finished with the procedure, any excess blood or fluid will be gently cleaned off before you leave.

The treatment will take about an hour from start to finish.

What’s the first Step?

The first step in getting Hair Restoration in the Boston area is to contact your nearest SkinHealth Center location and schedule a consultation with one of our providers. When you come into our office, you will have your head examined and also be able to discuss your best options for hair restoration. They will also discuss your medical history to make sure that you have no conditions that will impede your healing process. After collecting the information they need, your provider will create a treatment plan just for you. If you agree with this plan and wish to move forward, our Patient Coordinator will be able to help you schedule the day and time of your first session.

Hair Restoration Recovery

There isn’t much of a “recovery” following your Hair Restoration treatments. You will be able to do most things as normal, albeit you may need to be slightly more considerate of your growing follicles during the initial stages of your recovery. You will be able to shower and wash your hair as soon as you get home, however, you should try to be very gentle when rubbing your head. The first few hours after your session, your scalp will appear a little pink or red in the treatment area, but this should subside in about 24 hours.

Your old hair will begin to fall out as your new hair grows in, but this is completely normal and a part of the process. We strongly advise against returning to your usual hair maintenance (i.e. blow drying, coloring, curling, etc.) for the first few days, just to avoid damaging your newly stimulated hair. Also, avoid using an ice pack to soothe any discomfort as it can inhibit PRP/ PRF activity. If you do have any soreness, you can treat it with over-the-counter pain medication.
