Introduction to

BOTOX

As we laugh, cry, frown, or smile, we contract the delicate underlying muscles in our face, and sooner or later, we pay the price – frown lines, worry lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet. Injections of the purified protein Botulinum toxin A are utilized to temporarily block nerve impulses and weaken the muscles that cause those so-called “dynamic” lines. At SkinHealth Centers, we strive to deliver the best BOTOX injections to our Boston area patients. If you want to say goodbye to frown lines between the eyebrows, the forehead lines, and crow’s feet, we encourage you to continue reading below.

What is BOTOX?

Cosmetic Injectables are used to relax facial wrinkles and folds, such as “smile lines”, contour your body, enhance facial contours, and improve facial fat loss by creating a framework and structure and adding volume to your face and lips. While there are several options available on the market, most people are familiar with BOTOX treatments.

BOTOX® is made from botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. Although it sounds scary, when used in correct dosages by a professional, it can temporarily paralyze muscle activity by preventing a chemical called acetylcholine from releasing into your muscles. This helps prevent muscle spasms and lessens the appearance that certain muscle movements create in the future.

Some additional uses for BOTOX are treating Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and migraines. The botulinum toxin can be used to reduce sweating in the underarms, hands, and feet by blocking the sympathetic nerve fibers that control sweat glands and can successfully alleviate migraine headaches in some patients.

At SkinHealth Centers, some of the other FDA-approved neuromodulator options that we offer are Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveu.

What are the benefits of BOTOX?

Our Boston Botox injection patients have enjoyed the following benefits from their injection treatments:

  • Almost immediate results
  • Customizable
  • Enhances your natural beauty
  • Fast procedure
  • Improves certain health conditions
  • Long-lasting results
  • Non-invasive
  • Reduces dynamic wrinkles and fine lines for smoother skin

Dysport uses abobotulinumtoxinA, another botulinum toxin A product, that in certain clinical trials, has a more pronounced effect with longer-lasting effects but is associated with a higher incidence of side effects. Much like BOTOX though, when performed by a professional, is a great way to diminish frown lines between your eyebrows. Dysport creates a natural-looking appearance with over half of its users seeing improvements within two to three days, and can last up to five months.

Another alternative to BOTOX, but this uses incobotulinumtoxinA, a product of botulinum toxin A that is most frequently used to treat eyelids, neck muscles, and hand and arm spasms, as well as drooling and frown lines. Just like BOTOX, it is used to smooth out certain types of wrinkles but uses less of the botulinum toxin, so it’s often less expensive but can treat fewer types of wrinkles. On average, Xeomin lasts between three and six months with one injection.

A brand new injectable that is a great way to smoothen out forehead lines and wrinkles. It is injected directly into the muscle and will temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (also called glabellar lines). While it is comparable to BOTOX in its effect, it has been discovered to be a better fit for certain types of certain facial lines and wrinkles. Jeauveau can last between five and six months with one injection treatment.

Who are the best candidates for BOTOX?

Almost anyone can be a good candidate for BOTOX, however, the best candidates share the following characteristics:

  • At least 18 years of age or older
  • Have healthy skin with moderate elasticity but signs of aging are beginning to show
  • Have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the treatment
  • In good physical health
  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Willing to maintain a good skin care routine
  • Wrinkles are moderate to severe

If your facial expression lines are making you look older than you are or repetitive facial expressions are giving you the appearance of a frown or scowl, then you are an excellent candidate for wrinkle treatment.

Unfortunately, if you have a severe infection or illness, have very thick facial skin or deep facial scars, or suffer from ptosis (drooping eyelids), we can not recommend this treatment for you.

What to expect on the day of a BOTOX treatment

BOTOX® or one of the other Botulinum toxin A products is injected in tiny amounts into the muscles that create the lines. No anesthesia is required, although your doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream before injecting. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief.

Before we begin, you may be asked to make several facial expressions with your upper face, like squinting and frowning to help us visualize the best areas to place the injections. Your provider will use a very fine needle to inject deliberate doses of the neuromodulator into the determined areas.

After your session, the nerve impulses are blocked and the muscle weakens. This weakness lasts for between three and six months at which time injections can be repeated. You can expect to see results within days after your treatment, and the appearance of the area treated may continue to improve for up to a week.

After your injection, you will be able to return to your normal activities and your unwanted lines will fade away within days of treatment, creating a younger and more relaxed appearance. You should avoid anything too strenuous or touching your face during the first few days to avoid spreading the toxin to another location. If this does occur, you risk temporary facial weakness or drooping.
