Introduction to

IPL Photofacial

SkinHealth Centers is devoted to staying incredibly devoted to modern techniques regarding what we offer our patients. We strive to deliver state-of-the-art procedures that are easy and effective when it comes to improving our patient’s skin; this is why our team is passionately committed to intense pulsed light (IPL®) Photofacials. Overexposure to the sun, genetic conditions such as rosacea, and various aging factors have a significant impact on our complexion. This leaves many feeling hopeless about their skin, only anticipating that invasive or complex procedures are the only route to solutions. An IPL Photofacial is a fantastic non-surgical treatment that heals the damage to your skin as well as the symptoms of certain skin conditions. The technique boosts skin health and appearance and restores tone and texture, helping your skin be more resilient to environmental factors that break down skin cells.

What is an IPL Photofacial?

Every year, hundreds of patients visit the SkinHealth Centers office in search of solutions to skin problems, including fine lines and wrinkles, persistent red complexion, sun spots, acne scars, large pores, and other blemishes. IPL Photofacial in Boston is a perfect way to find the answer to these hurdles. With little downtown and dramatic results, the procedure requires intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to be applied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. IPL uses a range of wavelengths of light that target discoloration. By heating the structures that hold the color in your skin and destroying pigments (sunspots) or blood vessels, resulting in a more even-toned complexion. Also, as a result, it can stimulate collagen synthesis in the skin, producing a brighter and tighter skin texture.

What are the benefits of an IPL Photofacial?

There are many benefits of IPL for our Boston and Wellesley Hills patients. It’s a world-class treatment for wrinkles, acne, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and other concerns. Most benefits include:

  • Treatments take very little time
  • Improves your complexion
  • Most patients see an immediate improvement after one treatment
  • Optimum benefits are achieved in as few as two to three sessions
  • Eliminates scar tissue
  • It helps control acne breakouts
  • Kills harmful bacteria
  • Reduces redness and inflammation
  • Repairs smaller blood vessels
  • Treatments are affordable

These benefits are in addition to the skin rejuvenation that IPL offers by stimulating collagen. During your consultation, we explain the many other ways that an IPL skin treatment can help you.

Who are the best candidates for an IPL Photofacial?

A good candidate for this type of treatment in Massachusetts would be someone with blotchy, sun-damaged, or discolored skin. Those suffering from rosacea will see tremendous results as well as any of the issues below:

  • Brown or red blemishes
  • Sunspots
  • Age spots
  • Vascular redness
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Mole-like discolorations
  • Hormonal pigmentation

At SkinHealth Centers, we do not recommend this treatment for patients with melasma (a skin condition that causes patches and spots which are darker than your natural skin tone).

What to expect on the day of an IPL Photofacial?

Before any treatment begins on the day of your IPL Photofacial, we strive to keep you feeling confident and comfortable. Our skilled technicians will be on hand to deliver incredible results while simultaneously answering any questions you may have during the procedure; your treatment is our own, and at SkinHealth Centers, we are in this together.

IPL is a relatively simple process with little discomfort experienced. When we begin, we will cover your eyes with protection and apply a cold gel that will offer a soothing sensation. Based on the treatment plan details, we will set a specific light setting to achieve the best results. Our instrument then pulses light in short spurts on the area we look to improve. During treatment, the IPL wavelength is optimized so that the energy is absorbed only by the unwanted melanin, raising the temperature to cause the shattering of the unwanted pigment.

Treatments usually take approximately 30-45 minutes; this will vary specifically to the patient’s needs. Once complete, you can apply makeup before leaving the office and return to work the same day. We are thrilled to inform you that there is also minimal pain with IPL.

For best results, we recommend at least three treatments spaced three to four weeks apart. All future appointments will be discussed with our Patient Coordinator when your IPL Photofacial is complete.

IPL Photofacial Recovery

With IPL Photofacials, there is virtually no recovery time; you’re free to resume your usual activities once completed. It’s common after IPL Photofacial sessions to have some minor redness; this will settle within a few hours. In the weeks after treatment, the shattered melanin particles are eliminated through phagocytosis, whereby the fragmented pigments and damaged melanocytes are absorbed by the body.

In other words, the damaged target areas are absorbed to reveal bright smoother skin. The results of your IPL Photofacial therapy are long-lasting, and sustaining a proper skin care regimen afterward will help maintain your results even longer. Using high-quality sunscreen and taking good care of your skin helps ensure you enjoy the results for as long as possible.

Typically, a few visits after your first recovery will be necessary to treat sunspots, rosacea, and vessels.

  • Sunspots/Sun Damage: The sunspots will darken after treatment and be naturally shed from the skin within 1-2 weeks.
  • Rosacea: Skin tone will typically benefit from less pronounced redness within a week after treatments.
  • Spider Veins: Vessels may disappear after treatment, or they may appear darker and then fully or partially fade within 10-14 days.
