Intense pulsed light is a non-ablative technique to treat the above described conditions and is also called photorejuvenation, photofacial, or fotofacial.
How does IPL Photo rejuvenation work?
Optimally-filtered pulsed light targets the lesion, destroying it and causing it to disappear.
The IPL hand piece delivers high intensity pulses of broadband light that is different from the narrow band light of lasers. IPL, which stands for intensed pulsed light, is non-ablative meaning that is does not damage the surface of the skin. The intense light is delivered to the deeper parts of the skin (dermis) and leaves the superficial aspect of the skin (epidermis) untouched.
IPL targets both vascular lesions such as spider veins as well as pigmented lesions such as brown age spots. The thermal effect of IPL also causes production of new collagen, leading to improvement in wrinkles.
How Skin Rejuvenation Works
Our IPL device delivers energy to target and destroy vascular and pigmented lesions associated with spider veins, rosacea, telangiectasias, hemangiomas, sun damage, age spots, melasma, and angiomas from hands, chest, arms and face.
Using the principle of selective photothermolysis, these treatments target different chromophores in the skin, which selectively absorb the laser or light energy as heat and yield the desired response. These optimal wavelengths of light clear vascular and pigmented lesions by targeting the chromophores of hemoglobin (for vascular lesions) and melanin (for pigmented lesions). These damaged lesions are then cleared by the body, removing the appearance of the lesion from the skin. Pigmented lesions undergo a mild desquamation and slough off within two or three days, while the vascular lesions blanch and then resolve within 10 to 14 days.
How does IPL remove brown spots?
IPL technology allows the physician to select the wavelength and parameters appropriate to the specific type of pigmented lesion, depth and location.
During treatment, the IPL; wavelength is optimized so that the energy is absorbed only by the unwanted melanin, raising the temperature to cause shattering of the pigment.
Shortly after treatment, the unwanted pigment cells (or melanin) have been thoroughly fragmented without damage to the surrounding tissue.
In the weeks after treatment, the shattered melanin particles are eliminated through phagocytosis, whereby the fragmented pigments and damaged melanocytes are absorbed by the body. In most cases little or no trace of the initial lesion remains. What are IPL’s advantages?
As discussed above, IPL does not damage the skin surface. Therefore, there is virtually no recovery time. Treatments take approximately 30-45 minutes. Patients can apply makeup before leaving the office and return to work the same day. There is also minimal pain with IPL.
For best results, at least 3 treatments, spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart, are needed.
What should I expect after treatment?
Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs if necessary.
Typically, a few visits will be necessary to treat sunspots, rosacea, and vessels.
- Sunspots/Sun Damage: The sunspots will darken after treatment and be naturally shed from the skin within 1-2 weeks.
- Rosacea: Skin tone will typically benefit from less pronounced redness within a week after treatments.
- Spider Veins: Vessels may disappear after treatment or they may appear darker and then fully or partially fade within 10-14 days.
