Introduction to

Ultherapy

The human body can recover from some incredible events, which just goes to show just how resilient it is. Unfortunately, the older you get, the more difficult it is for things to “snap back” into place. This is because your body naturally loses collagen over the years and doesn’t produce as much as it used to. This leads to a lot of people’s skin beginning to sag or thin out so wrinkles become more evident. SkinHealth Centers in Boston and Wellesley Hills, MA offer Ultherapy, a virtually painless treatment that can help reignite the collagen-building process. Keep reading below to find out more about this ground-breaking procedure.

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy harnesses the power of ultrasound therapy to deliver its collagen-boosting treatment. It also incorporates traditional ultrasound imaging, which allows practitioners to see the layers of tissue they are treating, ensuring the treatment energy is delivered to where it will be most beneficial. It uses safe, time-tested ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin naturally. Ultherapy is the only non-invasive procedure FDA-cleared to lift skin on the neck, under the chin, and on the eyebrow as well as the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the décolletage.

Ultrasound is a form of mechanical energy that is significantly different than Light (Lasers) and Electrical (Radio-Frequency) energy. During Ultherapy, ultrasound is micro-focused below the skin’s surface to cause cellular friction and precise, pin-point heating. Similar to a magnifying glass focusing sunlight, heat is only generated at the focal point, leaving the skin’s surface and intervening tissue unaffected. Tissue at the focal point is heated to ~65°C, causing immediate collagen contraction and denaturation, and initiating aggressive collagen synthesis. Over 90-180 days, the wound-healing response stimulates long-term tissue remodeling and leads to further lifting and tightening, with results that can last a year or more.

What are the benefits of Ultherapy?

Our Boston area Ultherapy patients have been able to enjoy the following benefits from their treatment:

  • All-natural looking results
  • Builds collagen
  • Doesn’t require toxins or needles
  • Non-invasive lift
  • Safe ultrasound
  • Zero downtime

Who are the best candidates for Ultherapy?

At SkinHealth Centers in Boston, we believe the best candidates for Ultherapy are those with the following characteristics:

  • 30 years of age or older
  • Have noticeably sagging skin (specifically: eyelids, brows, neck, and chin)
  • In overall good health
  • Maintain realistic expectations for the treatment
  • Possess some skin elasticity

What to expect on the day of Ultherapy?

When you come into either one of our offices, you will begin by having the targeted treatment area cleaned off. Next, the technician will apply an ultrasound gel to your skin and press the smooth treatment applicator to your body. Using ultrasound, they find the best location for targeting the treatment.

During the treatment, you will feel the energy being deposited under the skin. It’s not painful, but you will know that something is happening, which indicates that the collagen production process has been triggered. This energy will feel very similar to a mild heating sensation with a little bit of tingling.

Depending on the area being treated, this process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half.

What’s the first Step?

The first step in getting Ultherapy in the Boston area is to contact your nearest SkinHealth Centers and schedule a consultation. When you come into our Medical Spa, you will meet with one of our physicians and discuss how this procedure can best help you. You will be able to ask any questions you have about the treatment and discuss what your goals are, are well as receive an evaluation of your skin. Once enough information has been collected, the physician can create your treatment plan. If you agree with the plan, you will be able to get your first Ultherapy session performed right away. If you need to reschedule for any reason, our Patient Coordinator will be able to help you find a date and time that is better for you.

Ultherapy Recovery

You will be able to return to your daily activities immediately following your treatment. The skin of the treated area may seem a little flushed at first, but that redness should disappear within a few hours. On rare occasions, patients may experience some mild swelling, tenderness, or tingling, but again, this should be better within a few hours.

You should only need one session to benefit from the treatment, however, additional treatments may be required for those with more skin laxity or how your body responds to the treatment. We do encourage “maintenance” sessions every year to help maintain results.
